Grado GW100 : the company’s first wireless headphones

Grado Labs, a 65-year old American company known for making high-quality open back headphones with a classic design, have announced their first pair of wireless headphones. The GW100, the company’s first wireless headphones that just happen to be the first open-back wireless headphones, too.

The GW100s have a familiar look but integrate Bluetooth tech and volume controls. The GW100 is on sale now for $249 at the Grado Labs website. The GW100 seems better suited for your desk or easy chair. The headphone’s design looks very similar to Grado’s affordable Prestige series headphones. (According to Grado, the GW100 isn’t based on any specific wired product. It’s a fresh design.) While it’s nice that the headphones have that iconic look, and they’re quite lightweight,

One of the main downsides of open-back headphones is noise you hear a lot of the outside world, and the sound of the headphones likewise leaks out. but the company says that they’ve redesigned the housings and internals of the GW100s to reduce noise leakage by 60 %. Earpads are scratchy and constantly pop off.

The headphones charge via micro-USB and offer a 15-hour battery life It got  Bluetooth 4.2 with aptX which handles the playback here and Grado says you can expect a range of about 10 meters (about 33 feet).  there is also a 3.5mm cable so that you can use it when the battery dies.

There are some common features at work on the GW100 though. On-board controls will help you adjust volume, skip tracks and pause music. The volume and power buttons actually pull double duty. A short press on the power button is the play/pause control while a long press on the volume buttons will skip to either the next or previous song. The power button is also used to answer calls, and a built-in microphone allows the person on the other end to hear you. Lastly, a charging light indicates when the GW100 is powered on, fully charged, charging or has low battery with either solid or flashing red and blue.
